Buying & Selling Tips
Buying goods second hand is a great way to grab a bargain. Unfortunately however, it pays to be wary when purchasing goods from someone you don’t know. We’ve included a few simple hints for buyers who want to play it safe.
Tips for Buyers
- Establishing whether or not the person selling the item is the true owner is important. Always ask for an old receipt. If the vendor can't produce a receipt, ask for an old manual, or warranty, perhaps even the original box.
- NERDS receipts are a good form of proof of ownership.
- Write down the product's serial number or VIN number and "Nerds check it."
- If the item is engraved, ask to see the owners drivers license. Compare the number engraved, with their driver's license number, the two should match.
- Look at the asking price for the product for sale, if it looks too good to be true it usually is.
- "REVS check" all vehicles before purchase.
- If the item is registered with NERDS and you wish to purchase it, ensure that it is removed from their records. Remember to up-date your records with any additional purchases.
Be firm but fair, you don't have to be rude to make an informed decision. Being polite costs nothing.
Tips for making a sale
- Try and find a receipt, old warranty, original operations manual, or even the original box the item came in.
- If the goods are registered on NERDS, print your records to establish further proof of ownership.
- Permit a NERDS check even if the item isn't registered in the system, or a REVS check if you are selling a vehicle.
- If the item is engraved offer your Driver's License.
- Explain why you are selling the item, always be honest, even the hint of a lie is enough to arouse suspicion.
- Know your product and place a price that is fair.
- If the item is registered with NERDS, remove it from your records if it is sold, printing a new item list and verifying this to the buyer.
- Be friendly and up front, if there is anything wrong with the item a potential buyer will probably find out. Let them know of any imperfections and they will appreciate your honesty.
